Everything you need to know about growing juicy tomatoes and herbs in urban containers.

Balcony Vegetable Gardening 101: Soil, Sun & Pot Sizes

Starting your urban balcony garden

Growing your own organic produce on an apartment balcony is immensely rewarding. To ensure success in Indian climatic conditions, focus on three pillars: soil mix design, sunshine hours, and container drainage.

1. The Ideal Potting Mix

Avoid standard soil which compacts quickly in pots. Instead, use equal parts cocopeat, vermicompost, and garden soil with a handful of neem cake powder to keep root pests at bay.

2. Sunshine Requirements

Fruiting vegetables like cherry tomatoes and peppers require at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight. Leafy greens and herbs like basil can thrive with 3-4 hours of bright indirect sunlight.
